Peter Vyvyan is our chief engineer at Cornish Crabbers and Mystery Yachts – there’s not a lot he doesn’t know about the engines we fit.
How long have you been working with Cornish Crabbers?

What’s your general advice for boat owners at this time of year?
“The first thing I’d say is to make sure you always get your engine serviced and winterised at the end of the season regardless of how much it was used. If you are not sure about servicing, get a professional to do it. Most of our customers do. Other than that, it’s definitely worth learning how to bleed your engine in case of fuel starvation. It is really important that air does not get into your diesel – you won’t get far if it does!”
Our most popular boat, the Shrimper 19, is fitted with a Yanmar 1GM 10. What specific tips would you give to owners?
“A couple of quick checks you can do on a 1GM is to ensure that the water pump is not leaking from the telltale hole in the pump body. If left, it will rot the oil pipes which can cause catastrophic damage.
Always check the engine anode too. If corroded it can drop off inside the engine and block the waterways.
A really handy spare for the 1GM is a water impeller or two as well as the tools to change them. A servicing kit is also very handy.
And before you set off for a sail?
Always fully check and charge the battery. Ensure water intakes are clear. Ensure that the engine will turn over (very briefly) before committing yourself to launch.
